A Man Saved a Female CEO’s Life One Night—Then Walked Into Her Company for an Interview the Very Next Morning

Chapter 11

Marcus disappeared before sunrise.

His apartment was empty.

His car was abandoned near the river.

His phone had been destroyed.

But Ethan found one clue.

A parking receipt.

The location was a private airfield outside Chicago.

Victoria, Ethan, and Daniel drove there with federal investigators secretly following.

Inside a hangar, they found Marcus.

He wasn’t alone.

Several boxes were stacked around him.

Documents.

Hard drives.

Old Project Phoenix equipment.

Victoria raised her weapon.

“Marcus.”

He turned.

“I can explain.”

“You shot at us.”

“No.”

Daniel laughed.

“Of course you didn’t.”

Marcus looked at Ethan.

“Your father trusted me.”

Ethan stared.

“You knew my father?”

“Yes.”

“Who was he?”

Marcus hesitated.

“His name wasn’t Cole.”

Ethan’s face went blank.

“Then who am I?”

Marcus looked at Victoria.

“Your father helped hide him.”

Daniel interrupted.

“Tell him.”

Marcus sighed.

“Ethan’s biological father was an engineer working on Project Phoenix.”

Ethan couldn’t speak.

“His name was Michael Carter.”

“Carter?”

“Yes.”

“He died in an accident.”

“No.”

Marcus shook his head.

“He disappeared.”

Ethan felt the room spin.

His entire childhood had been built on a lie.

Marcus continued.

“Michael discovered Project Phoenix could predict human behavior using private data.”

Victoria’s eyes widened.

“That wasn’t logistics.”

“No.”

“It was surveillance.”

“Yes.”

Ethan understood.

The technology could track purchasing habits.

Travel.

Communications.

Work patterns.

Financial behavior.

It could predict what people would do before they did it.

A dangerous system.

Michael wanted to destroy it.

Victoria’s father wanted to expose the people who had weaponized it.

Daniel wanted to steal it.

Thomas wanted to sell it.

And Marcus had spent years trying to contain it.

“So who is the Architect?” Ethan asked.

Marcus looked at Victoria.

Then Daniel.

Then finally Ethan.

“Your mother.”

Ethan’s heart stopped.

“My mother died.”

“She disappeared.”

“No.”

“She changed her identity.”

Ethan shook his head.

“Why?”

“To protect you.”

Marcus handed him a file.

Inside was a photograph of a woman Ethan hadn’t seen since childhood.

His mother.

Older.

Alive.

A handwritten address was attached.

Ethan stared at it.

“She has been living twenty miles from here.”

Victoria touched his shoulder.

“You don’t have to go.”

“I do.”

They drove to the address.

It was a small house surrounded by trees.

Ethan knocked.

The door opened.

A woman stood there.

Older.

Gray hair.

Tears filling her eyes.

“Ethan.”

He couldn’t move.

“Mom?”

She reached for him.

He stepped backward.

“You’re alive.”

“Yes.”

“You lied to me.”

“I protected you.”

“You let me believe my father died.”

“He didn’t.”

Ethan’s voice broke.

“Where is he?”

His mother looked toward the road.

“He’s alive too.”

Silence.

Then she whispered,

“And he’s coming for you.”
