A Broke Widow Tried to Sell Her Last Horse for $2—The Rancher’s Response Changed Her Life Forever
Chapter 8
Lord William Harrow arrived at Nathaniel’s ranch two days later.
He came in a polished carriage with two servants and three armed men.
He expected Margaret to be frightened.
She was not.
Nathaniel met him outside.
Harrow descended.
“You have interfered with my business.”
Nathaniel’s expression remained calm.
“Your business is stealing land.”
“You have no proof.”
Nathaniel held up the survey.
Harrow’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But Margaret saw it.
“That document is worthless.”
“It bears the surveyor’s seal.”
“Dead men cannot testify.”
Nathaniel looked at him.
“The surveyor is not dead.”
Harrow’s smile disappeared.
Margaret stepped forward.
“You bought my husband’s land from a man who never owned it.”
Harrow laughed.
“You are a widow.”
“Yes.”
“You have no understanding of property law.”
Margaret looked at the parchment.
“I understand enough.”
Harrow leaned closer.
“You should accept the settlement offered by Finch.”
“What settlement?”
“Enough money to leave the valley.”
Margaret’s voice became cold.
“You mean the money you offered me in exchange for stolen land?”
Harrow smiled.
“You should be practical.”
Nathaniel stepped between them.
“She has answered.”
Harrow looked at him.
“This is not your property.”
“No.”
Nathaniel’s eyes hardened.
“But she is under my protection.”
Margaret touched his arm.
“No.”
He looked at her.
“I will speak for myself.”
Nathaniel stepped aside.
Margaret faced Harrow.
“You have mistaken poverty for weakness.”
Harrow’s expression darkened.
“You will regret this.”
“I already regret one thing.”
“What?”
“That I ever believed men like you could be trusted.”
Harrow turned.
His carriage disappeared down the road.
Nathaniel watched until it was gone.
“You should not have confronted him.”
Margaret frowned.
“You told me to speak for myself.”
“I did.”
“Then let me.”
He looked at her.
A faint smile appeared.
“I am learning.”
