Grace found him there.
“You okay?”
“No.”
She sat beside him.
“You don’t have to be.”
He looked at her.
“I spent two years thinking I lost my father to bad luck.”
Grace nodded.
“Now you know he was trying to protect people.”
Caleb looked across the valley.
“Sometimes I wish I hadn’t found the truth.”
“Do you?”
He thought about it.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because if I hadn’t, they’d still own everything.”
Grace smiled.
“Then your father was right to trust you.”
He looked at her.
“How do you know he trusted me?”
She pointed toward the notebook.
“He left the land to you.”
Caleb smiled.
For the first time since the investigation began, he felt something other than anger.
