I Was Dared to Dance With the Quiet Girl—Then She Whispered Something Unforgettable
Chapter 1
Why did the quietest girl in school look at me like she had been waiting years for that one dance?
The question would not leave my mind.
It began at the senior winter formal, under strings of white lights and paper snowflakes that hung from the gym ceiling. Music shook the polished floor while nearly two hundred students crowded around the dance area, laughing, shouting, filming one another on their phones.
I stood near the refreshment table with a plastic cup of soda in my hand, pretending I wasn’t bored.
Then Jake Morgan slapped my shoulder.
“You’re going to dance with her.”
I turned.
Across the gym, beside the tall windows, stood Emily Carter.
She wasn’t doing anything.
She never seemed to be doing anything.
While everyone else danced, Emily sat alone on a folding chair with her hands folded neatly in her lap. Her dark blue dress was simple, without glitter or expensive jewelry. Her brown hair fell over one shoulder. She watched the room quietly, occasionally lowering her eyes whenever someone looked at her.
Emily had been in our class since freshman year.
I had probably spoken to her fewer than ten times.
She was known as the quiet girl.
Not because she was unfriendly.
Because she almost never spoke unless someone spoke to her first.
“Absolutely not,” I said.
Jake grinned.
“Scared?”
“I’m not dancing with someone because you dared me.”
“Then you’re scared.”
Several guys nearby heard him.
Within seconds, the dare became entertainment.
“Go!”
“Ask her!”
“Come on, Ethan!”
I looked across the room again.
Emily was still sitting alone.
Then she looked up.
Our eyes met.
Something in her expression made me stop smiling.
She didn’t look embarrassed.
She didn’t look annoyed.
She looked almost…sad.
Jake shoved me lightly.
“Go.”
I don’t know why I listened.
Maybe because everyone was watching.
Maybe because I felt guilty.
Or maybe because when Emily looked away, I suddenly wanted to know why.
I crossed the dance floor.
Emily noticed me coming and straightened slightly.
“Hi,” I said.
“Hi.”
Her voice was softer than I expected.
I rubbed the back of my neck.
“Would you…dance with me?”
For a second, she said nothing.
Then she stood.
“Okay.”
The music changed to a slow song.
People around us immediately started laughing and cheering.
I heard Jake yell, “That’s my boy!”
Emily heard it too.
Her cheeks turned pink.
I placed one hand carefully at her waist.
She rested hers on my shoulder.
We began moving slowly.
At first, it was awkward.
Then something strange happened.
The noise around us seemed to disappear.
Emily didn’t talk.
Neither did I.
But she wasn’t uncomfortable anymore.
She looked directly at me.
Her eyes were clearer than I had ever noticed.
“You don’t have to pretend,” she whispered.
I frowned.
“Pretend what?”
Her fingers tightened slightly against my shoulder.
“That you wanted to ask me.”
I opened my mouth.
Before I could answer, she leaned closer.
Her lips barely moved.
And then she whispered six words that changed everything I thought I knew about her.
“I know why you stopped coming.”
My entire body went still.
Because Emily wasn’t talking about the dance.
She was talking about my father.
