The CEO Shoved an Elderly Woman Asking for Bread—Then Learned She Owned the Company

Chapter 1

“Please, ma’am… I only need enough for one loaf.”

The elderly woman’s voice was barely louder than the hiss of the automatic doors behind her.

She stood inside the marble lobby of Whitmore Foods, clutching a few wrinkled bills in one hand and a worn canvas handbag in the other. Her gray coat was several years out of fashion, her shoes were scuffed, and a thin strand of silver hair had escaped from beneath her knitted hat.

Across from her stood Victoria Crane, the company’s newly appointed CEO.

Victoria glanced at the woman, then at the security guard.

“She isn’t a customer,” Victoria said coldly. “Why is she still inside?”

The receptionist lowered her eyes.

“She said she was hungry.”

Victoria sighed.

“This is a corporate headquarters, not a shelter.”

The woman swallowed.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to cause trouble. I just thought the cafeteria might have some bread left. I can pay.”

She held out the bills.

Victoria looked at them as if they were dirty.

“You came into a building worth hundreds of millions of dollars to beg for bread?”

“I’m not begging.”

The woman’s voice trembled.

“I’m asking.”

Victoria stepped closer.

“You need to leave.”

The woman hesitated.

“I only need one loaf. My grandson—”

“I said leave.”

The woman took a step backward.

Her handbag caught against the edge of a marble table.

A few papers slipped from it.

She bent down slowly.

Before she could gather them, Victoria reached forward and shoved her shoulder.

It was not a violent blow.

But it was enough.

The elderly woman stumbled.

Her cane struck the floor.

The bills scattered.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then the woman looked up.

There was no anger in her face.

Only disbelief.

Victoria straightened her jacket.

“Security.”

The guard immediately stepped forward.

“Remove her.”

The woman slowly collected her papers.

One of them had fallen face-up on the floor.

At the top was the Whitmore Foods logo.

Below it was a name.

Margaret Whitmore.

The security guard glanced down.

His face changed.

“Ma’am…”

Victoria turned.

“What?”

The guard picked up the document with shaking fingers.

“I think you should look at this.”

Victoria snatched it from him.

Then she read the name again.

Margaret Whitmore.

The founder.

The controlling shareholder.

The woman whose signature could remove a CEO before lunch.

Victoria’s face went completely white.

Because the elderly woman was already standing.

And she was looking directly at her.

“I was going to offer you a second chance,” Margaret whispered.

“But after what you just did…”

She picked up her cane.

“…I don’t think you deserve one.”
