The Beautiful Strange Woman Arrived at the Wrong Ranch by Mistake—Then She Saved the Cowboy’s Future

Chapter 1

The woman arrived at Ethan Cole’s ranch just before sunset.

That was the first thing that made him suspicious.

The second was the fact that she was driving a car that had absolutely no business being on a dirt road thirty miles outside town.

Ethan stood beside the old wooden fence, one hand resting on the top rail as the dusty silver sedan bounced toward him.

Behind him, the cattle moved slowly toward the water troughs.

The late-August sun burned orange across the Montana sky.

His ranch had been in the Cole family for three generations.

It was everything he had left.

Five hundred acres of dry pasture.

A weather-beaten farmhouse.

A barn that needed a new roof.

And a bank loan so large that Ethan sometimes wondered whether the land actually belonged to him anymore.

The sedan stopped.

The driver’s door opened.

A woman stepped out.

She was beautiful.

Not in the polished, artificial way Ethan had seen in wealthy visitors to town.

She was naturally striking.

Dark blonde hair.

Pale skin.

Green eyes.

A cream-colored blouse covered by a dusty brown coat.

She looked completely out of place standing beside his broken fence.

She glanced around.

Then at him.

“Excuse me.”

Ethan didn’t move.

“Yes?”

“I think I’m lost.”

He almost smiled.

“That’s obvious.”

She sighed.

“I was trying to reach the Harper Ranch.”

“This isn’t the Harper Ranch.”

“I know that now.”

Ethan studied her car.

“You came down the wrong road.”

“I followed the GPS.”

“The GPS sent you into a pasture?”

She looked embarrassed.

“Apparently.”

Ethan finally smiled.

“Turn around.”

“I tried.”

“What happened?”

“My car got stuck.”

He looked at the rear tires.

One was buried halfway in soft dirt.

Ethan walked toward it.

“You’re lucky you didn’t break an axle.”

She looked at him.

“Can you help me?”

He considered saying no.

He had spent the entire day repairing a fence.

His right shoulder hurt.

He still had forty head of cattle to check.

And strangers were rarely worth the trouble.

But the sun was setting.

She was alone.

So he grabbed the tow chain from his truck.

“Get back in the driver’s seat.”

“You’re going to pull me out?”

“That’s the idea.”

She looked relieved.

“Thank you.”

“Don’t thank me yet.”

Twenty minutes later, her car was back on solid ground.

She climbed out.

“I owe you.”

“You don’t.”

“I mean it.”

Ethan leaned against his truck.

“Where are you really trying to go?”

“The Harper Ranch.”

“Why?”

She hesitated.

“It’s complicated.”

“Most things are.”

She gave him a small smile.

“My name is Clara Hayes.”

“Ethan Cole.”

Her expression changed slightly.

“Cole?”

“Yes.”

She looked toward the farmhouse.

“Do you own this place?”

“For now.”

She didn’t understand.

Before she could ask, Ethan’s phone rang.

He answered.

“Hello?”

It was his banker.

The conversation lasted less than a minute.

When he hung up, Clara noticed the change in his expression.

“Bad news?”

“Nothing you need to worry about.”

“You look worried.”

Ethan stared at the horizon.

“The bank is calling the ranch loan.”

Clara frowned.

“Calling it?”

“Foreclosing.”

She looked at the land.

“When?”

“Thirty days.”

Silence followed.

Then Clara asked,

“How much do you owe?”

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“More than I have.”

She hesitated.

“I may know someone who can help.”

Ethan looked at her.

“You don’t even know me.”

“I know.”

She glanced toward the road.

“I also know a thing or two about land.”

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“Who are you?”

Clara smiled faintly.

“That’s a longer story.”

She climbed back into her car.

“I’ll see you again.”

“You don’t know where you’re going.”

She looked at him.

“Apparently, I didn’t need to.”

Then she drove away.

Ethan watched the dust settle.

He didn’t know it yet, but the beautiful stranger who had arrived at the wrong ranch was about to become the reason he didn’t lose everything his family had built.
