His Fiancée Betrayed Him Publicly—Then the Mafia Boss Chose the Woman Everyone Mocked

Chapter 1

The ballroom of the Bellagio Grand was filled with four hundred people when Isabella Romano destroyed her engagement.

Adrian Moretti stood beside her beneath a wall of golden lights, one hand resting casually against the podium.

He was thirty-five.

Calm.

Impossibly composed.

And feared by almost everyone in the room.

The Moretti family owned legitimate shipping companies, luxury properties, restaurants, and private clubs across the city.

They also had another reputation.

Nobody crossed Adrian Moretti twice.

Tonight was supposed to be his engagement celebration.

Isabella was supposed to stand beside him and announce their wedding date.

Instead, she took the microphone.

“Before we continue,” she said, smiling at the crowd, “there is something everyone should know.”

Adrian looked at her.

Something in her expression was wrong.

She turned toward him.

“I cannot marry a man who has never been honest with me.”

The room went silent.

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“What are you talking about?”

Isabella held up a folder.

“For years, Adrian has pretended to be a respectable businessman.”

Whispers spread.

“He isn’t.”

She looked toward the audience.

“He’s built his empire through fear.”

Adrian didn’t move.

One of his advisers stepped forward.

“Mr. Moretti—”

Adrian raised one hand.

Stop.

Isabella continued.

“I stayed because I believed I could change him.”

A few guests looked sympathetic.

Then she smiled.

“But I finally realized I deserve better.”

She removed the engagement ring.

And dropped it onto the podium.

The sound was small.

The effect wasn’t.

Adrian stared at her.

“You could have told me privately.”

“You don’t deserve privacy.”

Someone in the audience whispered that Adrian had been humiliated.

Another whispered that Isabella had finally escaped.

Adrian looked around the ballroom.

The room was full of people waiting to see what he would do.

He could have exploded.

He didn’t.

He simply picked up the ring.

Then he looked at Isabella.

“Congratulations.”

She blinked.

“For what?”

“For making your decision.”

He placed the ring inside his pocket.

“Now leave.”

She hesitated.

Then walked away through a sea of shocked faces.

Adrian remained standing beneath the lights.

The engagement party was over.

But before the guests could leave, something else happened.

A young woman slipped near the back of the room.

A tray crashed.

Several glasses shattered.

People laughed.

“She always does that.”

“That girl is useless.”

The woman hurried to clean everything.

Her name was Elena Carter.

Twenty-nine.

Quiet.

Plainly dressed.

And almost invisible to the wealthy guests around her.

She worked for the event company that had catered the party.

She had spent the evening carrying trays while wealthy people discussed cars and yachts.

Now, with everyone staring, she knelt on the floor gathering broken glass.

Adrian noticed her.

Not because she was beautiful.

Not because she was trying to impress him.

Because she was the only person in the room who wasn’t watching his humiliation.

She was simply trying to clean up the mess.

Adrian walked toward her.

“Leave it.”

Elena looked up.

“Sir?”

“I said leave it.”

“But someone could get hurt.”

Adrian looked at her.

She had a small cut on her finger.

“You’re bleeding.”

She glanced down.

“Oh.”

She wiped it against her apron.

Adrian took a handkerchief from his pocket.

“Use this.”

Elena stared at it.

Then at him.

“You seem to be having a worse night than I am.”

For the first time that evening, Adrian almost smiled.

“You have no idea.”

She looked at the ring in his pocket.

Then back at him.

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be.”

He turned away.

But before he left, Elena said something that nobody else had dared to say all night.

“Maybe you’re better off without her.”

Adrian stopped.

He looked back.

Elena immediately regretted speaking.

“I shouldn’t have—”

“No.”

He smiled faintly.

“You probably shouldn’t have.”

Then he walked away.

Neither knew that by sunrise, Elena would become the only person Adrian trusted.

And the woman everyone had laughed at would be standing beside the most feared man in the city.
