My Neighbor Asked Me to Watch Her Daughter for One Hour… She Didn’t Come Back Until Sunrise
Chapter 1
At 10:47 p.m. on a cold Thursday night in suburban Ohio, someone knocked three times on Daniel Carter’s front door.
Not the casual knock of a neighbor.
Not the impatient pounding of someone in a hurry.
Three soft, deliberate taps.
Daniel looked up from the kitchen table where he was helping his eight-year-old daughter, Lily, finish a science project about the phases of the moon.
“Who is it?” Lily asked.
Daniel glanced at the clock.
“Probably Mrs. Bennett.”
The house across the street belonged to Claire Bennett, a quiet woman in her early thirties who lived with her six-year-old daughter, Sophie. Daniel had known them for almost two years. Their houses faced each other across a narrow cul-de-sac lined with maple trees.
Claire was private, polite, and usually extremely careful about Sophie.
She had never asked Daniel to babysit before.
Daniel opened the door.
Claire stood on the porch wearing a gray sweatshirt, jeans, and sneakers. Her brown hair was pulled into a messy ponytail. Her face looked pale.
Behind her, Sophie stood clutching a small pink stuffed rabbit.
Daniel immediately noticed something was wrong.
“Claire?”
“I’m sorry,” she whispered. “I know it’s late.”
Daniel stepped outside.
“Is everything okay?”
Claire looked over her shoulder toward her house.
Then she looked back at him.
“I need to leave for a little while.”
“How long?”
“One hour.”
She swallowed.
“Maybe less.”
Daniel frowned.
“Where are you going?”
“I can’t explain.”
The answer bothered him.
Claire had never been dramatic. If anything, she was the opposite.
Daniel looked at Sophie.
The little girl’s cheeks were wet.
“Mom said I should stay with you.”
Daniel crouched down.
“Hey, Sophie. You want to come inside and help Lily with her moon project?”
Sophie nodded.
Claire suddenly grabbed Daniel’s wrist.
“Please.”
The desperation in her voice made him look at her differently.
“Claire, what happened?”
“I just need you to keep her safe.”
Daniel stood.
“Safe from what?”
Claire stared at him for several seconds.
Then she whispered something that made his stomach tighten.
“If anyone comes asking for her tonight, don’t give her to them.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Who?”
Claire shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
“That doesn’t make sense.”
“I know.”
She took a shaky breath.
“I’ll be back in an hour.”
Sophie stepped forward.
“Mom?”
Claire hugged her tightly.
Too tightly.
As if she were memorizing the feeling.
“I love you, baby.”
“I love you too.”
Claire kissed her forehead.
Then she stood and looked at Daniel.
“Lock the door behind you.”
“Claire—”
“Please.”
She hurried down the steps.
Daniel watched her cross the street.
She reached her front porch.
Stopped.
Looked back.
And for one strange second, their eyes met.
Then she disappeared inside.
Daniel closed his door.
He locked it.
Then he locked it again.
Lily was staring at him.
“Daddy?”
“Yeah?”
“Why was Mrs. Bennett crying?”
Daniel forced a smile.
“I don’t know.”
Sophie sat silently on the couch, squeezing her stuffed rabbit.
Daniel walked over.
“Hey, Sophie.”
She looked up.
“Does your mom have somewhere important to go?”
Sophie nodded.
“She said she had to fix something.”
“What thing?”
Sophie hesitated.
Then she whispered:
“The thing in the basement.”
Daniel’s smile disappeared.
“What thing?”
Sophie hugged her rabbit tighter.
“The box.”
“What box?”
Before Sophie could answer, Daniel heard something outside.
A car.
Slowly approaching the cul-de-sac.
Its headlights swept across his living-room curtains.
The vehicle stopped directly in front of Claire’s house.
Daniel moved toward the window.
A black SUV.
No one got out.
It simply sat there.
Engine running.
Daniel checked the clock.
10:58 p.m.
Only eleven minutes had passed.
Then his phone buzzed.
A text from Claire.
Don’t let anyone inside.
Daniel stared at the message.
A second text arrived.
Especially if they say they know me.
And then the lights in Claire’s house went completely dark.
