They Humiliated Her Boyfriend — Not Knowing She Owned the Hotel
Chapter 1
By the time Ethan Reed walked through the revolving doors of the Grand Aurelia Hotel, he had already decided he hated places like this.
The lobby was all polished marble, gold-trimmed pillars, giant flower arrangements, and chandeliers that looked like they belonged in a royal palace.
Ethan kept his hands in the pockets of his worn black jacket.
Beside him, Olivia Bennett smiled.
“Stop looking so nervous,” she whispered.
“I’m not nervous.”
“You’ve been staring at the floor for thirty seconds.”
“I’m making sure I don’t accidentally step on anything that costs more than my car.”
Olivia laughed softly.
“You know I don’t care about any of that.”
“I know.”
She slipped her hand into his.
That simple gesture eased something in Ethan’s chest.
They had been dating for seven months.
Olivia had always been different.
She never cared that he worked as a maintenance supervisor for a small property company. She never complained about his old truck, his modest apartment, or the fact that he had never traveled outside the country.
But Ethan knew she came from money.
Very serious money.
She had never told him exactly how much.
He had never asked.
Tonight was supposed to be simple.
Olivia had invited him to dinner at the Grand Aurelia because she wanted him to meet some of the people she worked with.
At least, that was what she told him.
“Relax,” she whispered. “Dinner. Conversation. Then we leave.”
Ethan smiled.
“You make it sound dangerous.”
“You have no idea.”
She said it with a strange little smile, but before he could ask what she meant, a sharply dressed man approached them.
He was in his early forties, with slick blond hair and a hotel badge pinned to his jacket.
“Ms. Bennett?”
Olivia nodded.
“Good evening, Mr. Harris.”
Daniel Harris glanced at Ethan.
His smile disappeared.
“Is this…?”
“My boyfriend.”
Daniel looked Ethan up and down.
The worn jacket.
The inexpensive watch.
The scuffed shoes.
Then he looked back at Olivia.
“I see.”
There was something in his voice Ethan didn’t like.
Olivia noticed it too.
“Daniel, this is Ethan Reed.”
Daniel gave Ethan a quick handshake.
His grip was cold and brief.
“Welcome to the Grand Aurelia.”
“Thank you.”
Daniel turned to Olivia.
“Your father said you were coming tonight.”
Olivia’s smile tightened.
“My father says many things.”
Daniel chuckled awkwardly.
“Of course.”
He stepped aside.
“I’ll have someone escort you to the private dining room.”
As they walked away, Ethan lowered his voice.
“Your father?”
Olivia sighed.
“I’ll explain later.”
She squeezed his hand.
Ethan nodded.
But he noticed something strange.
Several employees greeted Olivia with nervous expressions.
Some looked surprised to see her.
Others quickly looked away.
Ethan wondered why.
They reached the private dining area.
A group of six guests were already waiting.
Among them was a woman named Victoria Lang, the hotel’s general manager.
Victoria was elegant, confident, and clearly accustomed to being the most important person in the room.
Her eyes settled on Ethan.
Then her eyebrows rose.
Olivia introduced them.
Victoria smiled politely.
“Pleasure to meet you.”
Ethan returned the smile.
“Nice to meet you too.”
Victoria glanced at his jacket.
Then his shoes.
Then Olivia.
“You brought him?”
Olivia’s expression hardened.
“Yes.”
Victoria laughed lightly.
“I didn’t realize tonight was open to… guests.”
Ethan looked at Olivia.
She stared at Victoria.
“What exactly do you mean?”
Victoria lifted her champagne glass.
“Nothing, darling.”
But Ethan understood.
He had been judged in less than five seconds.
And he suddenly had the uncomfortable feeling that tonight was not going to be dinner.
It was going to be a test.
And he had no idea why Olivia had brought him into the room where everyone seemed determined to fail him.
