WHO FIRED HIM?” THE CEO DEMANDED—NO ONE KNEW THE QUIET SINGLE DAD WAS WORTH BILLIONS!
Chapter 9
David created a fake transfer.
Every patent appeared to move into Marcus’s control.
The transaction was convincing.
Too convincing.
Marcus accepted.
But David had built a hidden mechanism into the transfer.
The patents would never actually change ownership.
Meanwhile, federal agents traced the video.
They located the building.
An abandoned research facility outside the city.
David refused to wait.
He went with the authorities.
Victoria insisted on joining.
“You don’t have to.”
“Yes, I do.”
“Why?”
“Because this started with my family.”
David looked at her.
“And because Emma is family.”
They entered the facility.
Marcus was waiting.
Emma was tied to a chair.
David’s heart tightened.
“Dad!”
David stepped forward.
Marcus raised his weapon.
“Stop.”
David stopped.
“Let her go.”
“After the transfer.”
“You have it.”
Marcus smiled.
“Not yet.”
David displayed the confirmation.
Marcus checked it.
His expression changed.
“It worked.”
David nodded.
Marcus laughed.
For the first time, he looked genuinely happy.
“You have no idea how long I’ve waited.”
David stared.
“You could have built your own company.”
“I wanted yours.”
“Why?”
Marcus laughed.
“Because you destroyed my life.”
David shook his head.
“You did that yourself.”
Marcus’s face hardened.
“You fired me.”
“You stole from me.”
“You reported me.”
“Because you were stealing.”
Marcus pointed the gun at Emma.
“Enough.”
David immediately raised his hands.
“Okay.”
Emma looked at him.
David smiled.
“It’s okay.”
Then he looked at Marcus.
“You’ve won.”
Marcus relaxed.
That was when federal agents entered.
Marcus spun.
Gunfire erupted.
David moved toward Emma.
He shielded her.
Victoria pulled Emma away.
Marcus tried to escape.
He ran through the laboratory.
David followed.
They reached a rooftop.
Marcus turned.
“You think this changes anything?”
David stood across from him.
“It’s over.”
Marcus laughed.
“You’re still worth billions.”
David nodded.
“But I don’t care.”
Marcus looked confused.
David continued.
“I spent years thinking money could protect my family.”
He paused.
“I was wrong.”
Marcus raised his weapon.
David didn’t move.
“You’re going to shoot me?”
Marcus hesitated.
“You won’t.”
“Why?”
“Because you want revenge.”
Marcus’s hand shook.
David took another step.
“You don’t want me dead.”
“You want me to know you won.”
Marcus stared.
David was right.
Marcus wanted recognition.
He wanted David to admit defeat.
David finally said:
“You beat me.”
Marcus lowered the gun slightly.
That was enough.
Agents tackled him.
Emma ran into David’s arms.
He held her tightly.
“I’ve got you.”
She cried.
“I knew you would come.”
David kissed her hair.
“Always.”
Victoria watched from a distance.
For the first time, she understood why David had walked away from billions.
It wasn’t because he hated wealth.
He simply understood what mattered.
Family.
Time.
Peace.
And the freedom to choose.
But the story still had one final problem.
The patents Marcus had stolen were only one part of the conspiracy.
The Harrington trust contained evidence of decades of financial manipulation.
And Victoria’s father had left instructions.
The company could only survive if Victoria transferred control.
To David.
Victoria looked at him.
“I want you to take it.”
David shook his head.
“No.”
“You own part of the company.”
“Eight percent.”
“You’re the only person I trust.”
David smiled.
“Then trust yourself.”
Victoria looked at him.
He handed her the trust documents.
“You’re the CEO.”
She smiled.
“And you’re still fired.”
David laughed.
“Fair enough.”
