The Sick Mother Couldn’t Come — So Her 13-Year-Old Daughter Went Instead, and the CEO’s Next Move Stunned Everyone
Chapter 12
Twenty years after the night Lily first entered Halston Industries, she returned to the headquarters with her own daughter.
Her daughter was thirteen.
The age Lily had been.
They walked through the lobby.
Her daughter looked around.
“Mom, this place is huge.”
Lily smiled.
“I know.”
“Did you really come here when Grandma was sick?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“She couldn’t come.”
“So you went?”
“Yes.”
“Alone?”
“Mostly.”
Her daughter looked impressed.
“Weren’t you scared?”
“Terrified.”
“Then why did you do it?”
Lily thought about her mother’s words.
“Because someone had to.”
They reached the ballroom.
The doors were open.
Lily stopped.
Her daughter looked at her.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.”
Lily smiled.
“I just remember this place.”
They walked inside.
The stage was empty.
But Lily could almost hear the applause from twenty years ago.
Her mother.
The award.
Ethan.
The first decision.
The first change.
Her daughter asked:
“Did Grandma really get better because of this place?”
Lily nodded.
“Partly.”
“What happened?”
Lily sat beside her.
“Your grandmother was sick.”
She explained everything.
The ceremony.
The CEO.
The investigation.
The changes.
The foundation.
Her daughter listened.
When Lily finished, the girl asked:
“So that one night changed everything?”
Lily smiled.
“Sometimes one night is enough.”
Her daughter thought about it.
“Was Grandpa Ethan really a CEO?”
“Yes.”
“Did he really help Grandma?”
“Yes.”
“Where is he now?”
“At home.”
“Can we visit him?”
Lily smiled.
“Of course.”
That afternoon, they drove to Ethan’s house.
He was older now.
His hair was gray.
He walked with a cane.
But his eyes were the same.
When he saw Lily, he smiled.
“You’re late.”
Lily laughed.
“Sorry.”
He looked at the girl beside her.
“Who’s this?”
“My daughter.”
Ethan smiled.
“Thirteen?”
The girl nodded.
He laughed.
“Of course.”
Lily frowned.
“Why ‘of course’?”
“Because history has a sense of humor.”
The girl looked confused.
Ethan smiled.
“Your mother was thirteen when she changed my life.”
The girl looked at Lily.
“Really?”
Lily nodded.
Ethan looked at the girl.
“So what are you going to change?”
She laughed.
“I don’t know.”
Ethan smiled.
“You don’t have to.”
He paused.
“Just show up when someone needs you.”
The girl nodded.
And Lily realized that the lesson had traveled through three generations.
