THE BILLIONAIRE’S DAUGHTER FELL IN LOVE WITH HER UBER DRIVER

Chapter 12

Charles told them the truth.

Years earlier, when Gerald began moving money through shell companies, Charles discovered it.

Instead of reporting him immediately, he tried to recover the money quietly.

He authorized transfers designed to unwind Gerald’s scheme.

One transfer had been manipulated by Kane.

Another had been intercepted.

The resulting paperwork made Charles appear responsible.

“I made the mistake of trusting the wrong people,” Charles said.

Sophia stared at him.

“You should have gone to the police.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Because I thought I could fix everything.”

Ethan nodded.

“That was the problem.”

Charles looked at him.

“You’re right.”

That was the end of the family secret.

Not a clean ending.

Not a perfect one.

But an honest one.

Charles resigned from several boards.

He liquidated parts of Bennett Capital.

The company paid settlements to families affected by the aviation fraud.

And Sophia stopped being the daughter who simply inherited money.

She became a woman building something of her own.

Her relationship with Ethan became public.

The media went wild.

Some called him a gold digger.

Others called Sophia rebellious.

One magazine ran a photo of them with the headline:

BILLIONAIRE HEIRESS CHOOSES UBER DRIVER OVER BILLION-DOLLAR SUITORS.

Sophia hated it.

Ethan hated it more.

Lily thought it was hilarious.

“Dad, you’re famous again.”

“Please stop.”

She laughed.

One afternoon, Sophia asked Ethan to meet her at an airport hangar.

He arrived.

“What’s this?”

She handed him a set of keys.

“For what?”

“Open the hangar.”

He did.

Inside was an aircraft.

Beautiful.

Modern.

Customized.

He stared.

“You bought a plane?”

“No.”

“Then whose is it?”

“Ours.”

He looked at her.

“You’ve lost your mind.”

“Maybe.”

She walked inside.

The aircraft had been converted into a mobile aviation safety training center.

Ethan looked around.

“You built this?”

“With the company.”

He smiled.

“This is incredible.”

“You said you wanted to teach.”

“I did.”

“So teach.”

He pulled her into a hug.

“I love you.”

She smiled.

“I know.”

“No, really.”

“I know.”

He laughed.

“That’s arrogant.”

“I’m a billionaire’s daughter.”

He shook his head.

“You’re impossible.”

She kissed him.

“Yet you stayed.”

“Best decision I ever made.”

Later that evening, Ethan took Lily to see the aircraft.

She ran through it excitedly.

“Can I sit in the cockpit?”

“Not yet.”

“I know what a cockpit is.”

“I know.”

Sophia laughed.

She watched them.

For years, she’d believed family meant blood.

Her father.

Her uncle.

Her cousins.

The Bennett name.

Now she understood family could also mean choice.

The people who showed up.

The people who stayed.

The people who didn’t ask for anything except honesty.

And Ethan had done that from the first night.

He had picked her up in an old Toyota.

He hadn’t asked who she was.

He hadn’t asked how much money she had.

He had simply driven her home.

And somewhere between rain-covered windows, farmer’s markets, dangerous secrets, and late-night conversations, he had become home himself.

One evening, Ethan found Sophia standing alone on the balcony.

“What are you thinking?”

She looked at him.

“The first night.”

“The Uber ride?”

“Yes.”

“What about it?”

“I almost canceled.”

“Why?”

“I thought using Uber was embarrassing.”

He laughed.

“You were embarrassed?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I had a driver.”

He smiled.

“And now?”

“Now I’m glad he wasn’t available.”

Ethan walked closer.

“So am I.”

Then he took something from his pocket.

A small box.

Sophia’s eyes widened.

“What is that?”

He opened it.

Inside was a simple ring.

Not enormous.

Not flashy.

Nothing like the jewelry her father had bought her over the years.

Just something elegant.

Personal.

He took a breath.

“I know you’re used to people proposing because you’re a Bennett.”

She laughed nervously.

“And you’re not?”

“No.”

He knelt.

“I’m proposing because you’re Sophia.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Will you marry me?”

She stared at him.

Then smiled.

“Yes.”

But Ethan didn’t know that Sophia had already decided to surprise him too.

The next morning, she called Charles.

“Dad?”

“Yes?”

“I need you to chair a board meeting.”

“Why?”

“Because I have an announcement.”
