The Bank Called Her Cabin Worthless — They Never Told Her What Was Sealed Beneath the Floor

Chapter 11

The second compartment was much smaller.

Inside was a metal cylinder.

Mara opened it.

A single piece of paper was rolled inside.

The handwriting belonged to Samuel.

Claire read over her shoulder.

If the first vault is found, they will believe the secret is over.

Mara’s heart began racing.

The note continued.

It isn’t.

There was a second list.

Not names.

Locations.

Fourteen places across the United States.

Banks.

Warehouses.

Old mining towns.

Railroad depots.

Military storage sites.

Each had a date beside it.

The earliest was 1959.

The latest was 1987.

Claire looked stunned.

“Your grandfather knew about all of these?”

“I don’t know.”

At the bottom of the page was another sentence.

Bellwether was only one branch.

Mara looked up.

“What does that mean?”

Claire didn’t answer.

She was staring at the final location.

It was in Chicago.

The address belonged to a bank that still operated.

Mara felt a chill.

“Do you think they know?”

Claire folded the paper.

“They will.”

The next morning, Mara received an anonymous letter.

Inside was a photograph.

A modern bank building.

On the back:

You opened one door.

Underneath:

Don’t open the next.

Mara called Lucas.

He arrived within an hour.

She showed him the map.

He studied it.

“This isn’t a threat.”

“What is it?”

“A warning.”

“From who?”

“Someone who wants you alive.”

Mara looked toward the mountains.

Her grandfather had spent his final years protecting the first secret.

Maybe he had known there would be another generation.

Maybe he had expected Mara to finish what he couldn’t.

Lucas looked at her.

“You don’t have to do this.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

She smiled.

“Because someone spent sixty-seven years making sure nobody knew.”

She folded the map.

“I think people deserve to know.”

Lucas sighed.

“I was afraid you’d say that.”

He looked at the locations.

“I’ll help.”

Mara looked at him.

“You’re serious?”

“Yes.”

“You could lose your job.”

“Already almost did.”

They smiled.

Then Claire arrived.

She had discovered something.

One of the fourteen locations had been searched recently.

The search had occurred three days earlier.

Someone else had found the map.

And they were already moving.
