The university championship game approached.
The campus was electric.
Madison had graduated from the cheerleading squad but returned for alumni weekend.
She approached Emily before the game.
“Can we talk?”
Emily agreed.
Madison looked at her.
“I was angry.”
“I understand.”
“I thought you wanted Jackson because of his money.”
Emily shook her head.
“I never wanted his money.”
Madison nodded.
“I believe you now.”
She paused.
“You love him.”
Emily looked toward the field.
“Yes.”
Madison smiled faintly.
“I loved him too.”
There was no bitterness left in her voice.
“Take care of him.”
Emily nodded.
“I will.”
That night, Jackson led the team onto the field.
The stadium exploded.
Emily stood on the sideline.
Not inside the costume.
For the first time.
Jackson looked at her.
The crowd roared.
He smiled.
Then he played the best game of his life.
After the final whistle, he ran straight toward her.
Not Madison.
Not his teammates.

He stopped in front of her.
“I’ve been looking for you all year.”
She laughed.
“I was wearing a giant buffalo head.”
“Exactly.”
He took her hands.
“I think I fell for you before I even knew your name.”
Her eyes filled with tears.

“Every time you looked at Bruno.”
He laughed.
“So you knew?”
She smiled.
