She Took a Night Shift to Pay Her Tuition — Then the City’s Most Powerful Heir Walked Into Her Bar
Chapter 5
Evelyn returned home after midnight.
The door was unlocked.
She froze.
The apartment was small.
One bedroom.
Old furniture.
Nothing valuable.
Except the photograph.
She entered slowly.
Drawers had been pulled open.
Her father’s old boxes were scattered across the floor.
Someone had searched the place.
She grabbed her phone.
Before she could call anyone, a hand covered her mouth.
A second later, the intruder ran.
Evelyn chased him into the hallway.
He disappeared down the stairs.
She stood there shaking.
Then Adrian arrived.
He took one look at the apartment.
“Pack a bag.”
“No.”
“Evelyn.”
“I’m not going anywhere with you.”
“They searched your home.”
“I can protect myself.”
“Maybe.”
He looked at the broken lock.
“But whoever came here thinks you have something they need.”
Her anger faded.
“What do they want?”
Adrian looked at the photograph.
“I don’t know.”
“That’s not good enough.”
“No.”
He looked at her.
“Which is why I’m moving you and Lucas somewhere secure.”
She folded her arms.
“I am not your property.”
His expression softened.
“I know.”
“Then stop giving me orders.”
He nodded.
“Fine.”
He stepped back.
“You decide.”
It was the first time he had done that.
And Evelyn noticed.
