She Took a Night Shift to Pay Her Tuition — Then the City’s Most Powerful Heir Walked Into Her Bar
Chapter 12
The warehouse smelled exactly as Evelyn remembered.
Oil.
Dust.
Rust.
Her father had spent years there.
She searched the walls.
The machinery.
The storage cabinets.
Nothing.
Then she found a loose floorboard.
Beneath it was a metal tube.
Inside was a small digital recorder.
Her father’s voice filled the darkness.
“If you’re hearing this, I failed to stop them.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
He continued.
“Vivian isn’t working alone.”
A noise came from behind her.
She turned.
The door slammed shut.
Smoke began filling the room.
Evelyn ran toward the exit.
Locked.
She screamed.
Then she heard a crash.
Adrian.
He broke through the side door.
“Evelyn!”
“I’m here!”
He reached her.
Flames spread behind them.
He pulled her toward the exit.
She grabbed the recorder.
“Leave it!”
“No.”
“My father died for this.”
Adrian stopped.
Then he helped her carry it.
They escaped seconds before part of the ceiling collapsed.
Outside, Evelyn collapsed against him.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Adrian whispered:
“I thought I lost you.”
She looked up.
“You didn’t.”
Daniel arrived holding his phone.
“I copied everything from the recorder.”
Adrian stared.
“Everything?”
Daniel nodded.
“Enough to bring them all down.”
