She Loved a Poor Gardener—Then Discovered He Was the Heir to a Fortune
Chapter 12
When Thomas’s fortune became widely known, stories about him spread.
Some said he had been secretly educated in Europe.
Others claimed he had disguised himself deliberately to test people.
None were true.
The truth was simpler.
He had been afraid.
He had wanted one place where no one knew his name.

One evening, a wealthy merchant asked her:
“How did you manage to win the heart of a man like him?”
Clara smiled.
“I didn’t.”
The merchant looked confused.

“But surely his wealth—”
“He didn’t have it when we met.”
“Then what did you see?”
Clara thought of muddy boots.
A patched coat.
A rosebush.
A widow’s roof.
A piece of bread divided in half.
“I saw a gardener.”
The merchant laughed.
Clara didn’t.
“He was kind when no one important was watching.”
That was the truth.
And it was the only answer she ever gave.
