“Nobody Ever Picks Me… They Never Do,” the Little Girl Whispered — Until a Quiet CEO Knelt Down and Chose Her

Chapter 5

Marcus filed for custody.

The case immediately attracted media attention because Daniel Hart was a wealthy CEO.

Reporters wanted photographs.

Questions.

Scandal.

Daniel refused interviews.

Lily’s privacy came first.

The court ordered supervised contact between Marcus and Lily.

During their first meeting, Lily sat across from him.

Marcus smiled.

“I’m your father.”

Lily looked at Daniel.

He stayed silent.

Marcus tried again.

“Do you want to come live with me?”

“What do you like?”

Marcus looked confused.

“What?”

“What do you like?”

“Business.”

“I like stars.”

Marcus nodded.

“That’s nice.”

Lily asked:

“Do you know my favorite book?”

He hesitated.

“No.”

“Favorite food?”

“Not yet.”

“Why do you want me now?”

The room became silent.

Marcus didn’t have a good answer.

Lily looked down.

That meeting ended quickly.

Outside, Daniel didn’t say anything.

Lily finally whispered:

“He doesn’t know me.”

Daniel answered:

“No.”

“Then why does he want me?”

“I don’t know.”

She held his hand.

“Can we go home?”

Daniel smiled.

“Yes.”

The case became uglier.

Marcus’s lawyers argued that Daniel was trying to buy custody.

They claimed his wealth gave him an unfair advantage.

Daniel didn’t respond publicly.

His attorney presented evidence of Marcus’s history.

Financial instability.

Unpaid debts.

Lack of involvement.

Contradictory statements.

The judge ordered a full investigation.

Meanwhile, Daniel’s company suffered.

Executives worried about the media.

Shareholders questioned his distraction.

Daniel’s board asked:

“Should you step away temporarily?”

He considered it.

Then answered:

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because being a father doesn’t make me less capable.”

The board supported him.

But Daniel realized something.

He had allowed work to consume his life after Claire died.

He didn’t want to repeat that mistake.

So he delegated.

For the first time, he created boundaries.

No meetings after six.

No calls during dinner.

No weekend travel unless essential.

Lily noticed.

One evening, she asked:

“Why don’t you work tonight?”

“I have dinner.”

“With me?”

“Yes.”

She smiled.

They cooked.

Badly.

The pasta was overcooked.

Lily laughed.

“This is terrible.”

“Agreed.”

“Let’s order pizza.”

“Best idea you’ve had.”

They laughed.

The house changed.

It became warmer.

More alive.

Lily put drawings on the refrigerator.

Books appeared on tables.

Shoes appeared in hallways.

A stuffed rabbit lived on the couch.

Daniel didn’t mind.

He loved it.

Then Marcus made his biggest mistake.

He claimed Daniel had manipulated Lily against him.

The accusation hurt.

Lily’s therapist testified that Daniel had never spoken negatively about Marcus.

The social workers testified too.

The judge saw the pattern.

Marcus wasn’t fighting for Lily.

He was fighting for control.

The custody hearing approached.

Lily became anxious.

“What if they make me leave?”

Daniel knelt.

“Listen to me.”

“I’m listening.”

“No matter what the court decides, you will never be alone.”

She nodded.

“But what if I can’t stay?”

“We’ll keep fighting.”

She hugged him.

“I want you.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I want you too.”
