My Wife Came Home Pregnant After Her Vacation — Then I Discovered Why She Expected Me to Raise Another Man’s Child

Chapter 4

The paternity results arrived three days later.

Marcus asked me to come into his office.

He didn’t speak immediately.

He handed me the envelope.

I opened it.

The result was clear.

Probability of paternity:

0%.

I sat there staring at the page.

I didn’t feel angry.

Not yet.

I felt empty.

Four years of infertility.

Twelve days of vacation.

A pregnancy.

And now absolute proof that the child wasn’t mine.

Marcus asked:

“What do you want to do?”

“Divorce.”

He nodded.

“Immediately?”

“Immediately.”

“Do you want to confront her first?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I don’t want an argument.”

He looked at me.

“I want evidence.”

Marcus smiled.

“Good answer.”

I filed for divorce that afternoon.

Claire found out when her attorney called.

She came home furious.

“You filed without telling me.”

“I don’t need permission.”

“You are the father of my child.”

“No.”

She froze.

I placed the paternity report on the table.

She looked at it.

Then at me.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Finally:

“How did you get this?”

“That doesn’t matter.”

She picked up the report.

“This can be challenged.”

“It can.”

“I’ll prove you’re the father.”

“No.”

“You don’t understand.”

“I understand perfectly.”

She stared at me.

Then whispered:

“You promised.”

“I never promised to raise another man’s child while being lied to.”

Her face hardened.

“You’ll pay for this.”

I looked at her.

“Maybe.”

Then I picked up my suitcase.

“I won’t be bullied into becoming responsible for something you intentionally hid.”

I walked out.

But I wasn’t finished.

Because I still didn’t know who the father was.

And I needed to know why Claire had come home determined to make me legally responsible for the child.
