My Childhood Crush Knocked on My Door After 15 Years… She Was Holding a Letter With My Name On It.
Chapter 11
The tower stood over Chicago like a giant waiting to fall.
Hundreds of residents were still inside.
Officials evacuated the building after Ethan presented the preliminary evidence.
But Rachel had planned for that.
The building’s emergency systems suddenly failed.
Doors locked.
Elevators stopped.
Smoke filled the lower floors.
People began screaming.
Ethan rushed inside with emergency crews.
Claire stayed outside with Rebecca and federal agents.
“Don’t go in!” Claire shouted.
Ethan looked back.
“If I don’t, people die.”
He disappeared through the doors.
Inside, the building shook.
Ethan’s engineering instincts took over.
He studied the structural drawings.
The weaknesses were concentrated on the nineteenth and twentieth floors.
If the support columns failed, the upper floors would collapse.
He guided firefighters toward the safest evacuation routes.
Then he heard a child crying.
A little girl was trapped near an elevator.
Ethan carried her out.
One by one, people escaped.
But the building continued to weaken.
At 7:14 p.m., the main support beam cracked.
The entire structure groaned.
Ethan looked at his phone.
Rachel had sent one message.
You can’t save everyone.
He called her.
She answered.
“Why are you doing this?”
“Because people like my father don’t survive unless someone takes their place.”
“You became exactly like him.”
“No.”
Rachel laughed bitterly.
“I became smarter.”
“You murdered Daniel.”
“I didn’t.”
“You ordered it.”
“I ordered nothing.”
Ethan froze.
Rachel continued.
“Victor did.”
“Then why are you destroying the tower?”
“Because Victor left me no choice.”
She explained that Victor had hidden evidence of his crimes inside Northstar.
If the archive became public, Rachel would be prosecuted.
So she had created a final plan.
Destroy the building.
Destroy the servers.
Frame Ethan.
Then disappear.
Ethan said,
“You can still stop this.”
“No.”
“Rachel.”
Silence.
Then she whispered,
“I trusted you.”
Ethan’s voice softened.
“You were my friend.”
“I loved you.”
The words stunned him.
Rachel continued,
“Maybe that’s why this hurts.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
“You chose the wrong way.”
The line went dead.
He looked at the damaged support structure.
Then he realized something.
Rachel’s plan depended on the automated system.
If he manually shut it down, the building might stabilize.
But the control system was on the roof.
Ethan climbed.
Each floor shook beneath him.
Finally, he reached the control room.
The system showed a countdown.
FAILURE IN 00:03:41.
He opened the emergency panel.
The shutdown mechanism required two simultaneous controls.
One inside.
One outside.
He called Claire.
“I’m on the roof.”
“Ethan, what are you doing?”
“I need you to find the secondary control.”
“Where?”
“Basement mechanical room.”
Claire ran.
Rebecca followed.
Federal agents cleared the remaining residents.
Ethan reached the main control.
The countdown hit two minutes.
He heard footsteps behind him.
Rachel appeared.
She was holding a gun.
“Step away.”
Ethan slowly turned.
“Rachel.”
“You always had to be the hero.”
“No.”
He looked at her.
“I just couldn’t keep pretending nothing was wrong.”
Rachel raised the gun.
“Give me the drive.”
“No.”
“You don’t understand what happens if those files get out.”
“People finally learn the truth.”
Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.
“Truth doesn’t save people.”
Ethan said quietly,
“Sometimes it does.”
Rachel’s hand shook.
Then sirens sounded below.
She looked toward the window.
Federal agents were surrounding the building.
She had run out of time.
The countdown reached one minute.
Rachel lowered the gun.
“Go.”
Ethan stared.
“What?”
“Save them.”
He turned to the controls.
Rachel walked toward the window.
But before Ethan could activate the shutdown, the building suddenly lurched.
The control system flashed red.
FAILURE IMMINENT.
Ethan slammed both hands onto the emergency switches.
At the same moment, Claire reached the secondary control.
They pulled simultaneously.
The entire system shut down.
The building groaned.
Then stopped.
Silence.
Ethan collapsed against the wall.
Claire’s voice came through the radio.
“Ethan?”
He laughed breathlessly.
“I’m here.”
Rachel surrendered.
But as federal agents took her away, she looked back at Ethan.
“You still don’t know what the letter means.”
Ethan frowned.
“What?”
Rachel smiled sadly.
“Read the last page.”
