Doctors Declared the Little Girl Gone — Then a Homeless Veteran Whispered Five Words That Froze the ER

Chapter 4

The man’s name was Dr. Michael Harris.
He had worked at St. Mary’s for eleven years.
A respected pediatric neurologist.
Married.
Two children.
No criminal record.
No complaints.
No obvious motive.
Yet the security footage showed him entering Lily’s backyard.
The detectives immediately searched his office.
They found nothing.
His computer was clean.
His phone contained no suspicious messages.
His apartment was ordinary.
His bank accounts were normal.
Everything about him looked perfect.
Too perfect.
Samuel stood in the hospital corridor while detectives questioned Harris.
Daniel approached him.
“They’re not finding anything.”
Samuel looked at him.
“Because they’re looking for evidence.”
“What else should they look for?”
“Patterns.”
Daniel frowned.
Samuel opened his notebook.
“Look at the children.”
Daniel studied the pages.
“Different hospitals.”
“Different states.”
“Different families.”
“Different circumstances.”
“But?”
Samuel pointed.
“They all developed the same symptoms before something happened.”
Daniel read the notes.
Headaches.
Dizziness.
Sudden confusion.
Temporary paralysis.
Then unconsciousness.
“These could be neurological.”
“Exactly.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Someone may be causing them.”
Samuel nodded.
“But why?”
“That’s what we need to find out.”
Meanwhile, Emily sat beside Lily.
Her daughter was unconscious.
Machines kept her alive.
Emily held her hand.
“Please wake up.”
Lily’s fingers moved.
Emily gasped.
“Lily?”
Nothing.
Then the girl’s lips moved.
Emily leaned closer.
“What?”
Lily whispered something.
Emily couldn’t understand.
“Say it again.”
Lily’s eyes remained closed.
“Basement.”
Emily froze.
“What basement?”
Lily whispered:
“Blue door.”
Then she became still.
Emily immediately called Daniel.
He arrived seconds later.
“What did she say?”
“Basement. Blue door.”
Daniel looked at Samuel.
Samuel’s expression changed.
“Ask her about the door.”
“She’s unconscious.”
“Ask anyway.”
Emily leaned down.
“Lily, sweetheart, where is the blue door?”
Lily’s lips moved.
“School.”
Daniel frowned.
“What school?”
Lily whispered:
“Old school.”
Samuel opened his notebook.
There was only one abandoned school mentioned in his records.
A school building in a town thirty miles outside the city.
One of the fourteen children had disappeared there.
Samuel looked at Daniel.
“We need to go.”
The police wanted to stop them.
But Lily’s statement changed everything.
A detective checked property records.
The old school had been purchased six years earlier by a private foundation.
The foundation had no public activity.
No website.
No employees.
Its director was listed as—
Dr. Michael Harris.
Daniel stared at the screen.
“Harris owns it.”
Samuel nodded.
“Now we know where to look.”
They drove there before sunrise.
The school stood behind a rusted fence.
Windows were boarded.
The playground was overgrown.
But there were fresh tire tracks in the snow.
Someone had been there recently.
They entered through a side door.
Inside, the air smelled of dust and chemicals.
Samuel walked slowly.
He recognized the layout from an old police report.
“Basement?”
Daniel pointed.
“There.”
They found a staircase.
At the bottom was a blue door.
Samuel stopped.
Lily had been right.
The door was locked.
The detective broke it open.
Inside was a room filled with medical equipment.
Beds.
Monitors.
Medication.
Files.
Photographs.
Fourteen photographs.
Fourteen children.
Samuel walked toward the wall.
His breathing stopped.
At the end of the row was a fifteenth photograph.
Lily.
But underneath Lily’s photograph was another.
A photograph of a woman.
Samuel stared at it.
He knew her face.
It was Anna.
His daughter.
Alive.
And beneath her photograph was written:
SUBJECT ZERO.
