Billionaire Dad Pretended to Be Broke to Test His Daughter’s Nanny—She Had No Idea

Chapter 3

The following Monday, Daniel announced the bankruptcy.

He sat at the kitchen table with a stack of papers.

Emma stood by the stove making breakfast.

“Lily,” he said carefully, “Daddy has something to tell you.”

The little girl looked up from her cereal.

“Are we moving again?”

“No.”

“Are we poor forever?”

Daniel hesitated.

“I don’t know.”

Emma looked at him.

“What happened?”

“My company is in serious trouble.”

Daniel placed the documents on the table.

“I’m losing everything.”

Emma studied his face.

“Everything?”

“Almost.”

She didn’t answer immediately.

Then she asked:

“What about Lily’s school?”

“I can’t afford it.”

Lily’s spoon stopped.

“I don’t want to leave.”

Emma immediately put down the spatula.

“Sweetheart, look at me.”

Lily looked at her.

“School is important, but you don’t have to be afraid.”

“Everyone will know we’re poor.”

“No.”

Emma smiled.

“People don’t know everything about each other.”

Lily frowned.

“But my friends have nice houses.”

“That doesn’t make them better.”

Daniel watched the exchange.

He felt something unexpected.

Pride.

Not in himself.

In Emma.

She wasn’t performing kindness.

She wasn’t looking at him to see whether he approved.

She was simply protecting Lily.

That afternoon, Emma took Lily to a public school orientation.

Daniel secretly followed in the pickup truck.

He watched from across the street.

Emma spoke with the principal.

She asked about academic programs.

Transportation.

After-school care.

Lily’s transition.

She never once complained about Daniel.

Never once mentioned his wealth.

Never once asked for special treatment.

When they returned home, Daniel confronted her.

“You didn’t have to do all that.”

“Yes, I did.”

“Why?”

“Because Lily deserves stability.”

“Even if you don’t work for me anymore?”

Emma stared.

“I told you. I’m not here for your money.”

Daniel looked away.

“I know.”

But he didn’t.

Not completely.

That night, Daniel received a call from Marcus.

“How’s the experiment?”

“She’s still here.”

“That’s surprising?”

“Yes.”

Marcus laughed.

“You’re an idiot.”

“Excuse me?”

“You’ve spent your entire life measuring people by what they want from you.”

Daniel was silent.

Marcus continued.

“Maybe this woman doesn’t want anything.”

Daniel ended the call.

He couldn’t sleep.

At 2:00 a.m., he walked into the kitchen.

Emma was there.

She was sitting at the table, sewing a button onto Lily’s jacket.

“You should sleep,” he said.

“So should you.”

Daniel sat across from her.

“Why did you become a nanny?”

Emma smiled.

“I wasn’t planning to.”

“What were you planning?”

“Teaching.”

“Then why didn’t you?”

“My younger brother got sick.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What happened?”

“He needed treatment.”

“How old?”

“Seventeen.”

“Is he okay?”

“Now.”

Emma smiled.

“But my family spent everything.”

Daniel listened.

“I started working different jobs.”

“Then?”

“Eventually, I discovered I liked working with children.”

Daniel looked down.

“You sacrificed your career.”

“Not really.”

“Why?”

“Because sometimes life gives you a different path.”

She finished sewing.

Daniel looked at her.

“Do you regret it?”

“No.”

“Not even once?”

Emma shook her head.

“My brother is alive.”

She stood.

“That’s enough.”

Daniel watched her walk away.

He suddenly felt ashamed.

His test had been designed to discover whether Emma cared about money.

But he was beginning to discover something else.

She cared about people.

And unlike him, she didn’t need billions to prove it.

Still, Daniel continued the deception.

Because there was one final test.

He would tell Emma that he couldn’t afford to keep Lily with him.

He would claim he might lose custody.

And Daniel knew that was cruel.

But he believed he needed certainty.

He didn’t know that this lie would push Emma to make a sacrifice he could never have predicted.
