Billionaire CEO Goes Undercover—And Finds His Company’s Biggest Secret

Chapter 12

Their relationship developed slowly.

No headlines.

No public announcement.

Nathan still drove an old sedan when he wasn’t working.

Claire still lived in the same apartment.

They cooked dinner together.

Argued about movies.

Walked through the city.

The billionaire and the woman who had once believed he was a warehouse worker looked surprisingly ordinary.

That was exactly how Nathan wanted it.

Meanwhile, Cole Industries continued its transformation.

The restructuring cost billions.

But it worked.

Employees stayed.

Productivity improved.

Safety incidents dropped.

Customers returned.

The company’s reputation slowly recovered.

One afternoon, Nathan received a letter.

It came from his father’s lawyer.

Inside was a document.

The original will.

Nathan had never seen it.

His father had left control of the company under one condition.

If Nathan discovered evidence of misconduct, he was required to create an independent oversight trust.

He couldn’t own the company alone.

He had to give employees representation.

His father had planned everything.

Nathan stared at the document.

“He knew.”

Claire sat beside him.

“He hoped you’d find it.”

Nathan nodded.

At the bottom was one final sentence.

If my son chooses profit over people, he loses the company.

Nathan laughed quietly.

“Dad knew me.”

Claire smiled.

“He knew who you could become.”

That evening, Nathan took Claire to the factory.

They walked through the floor.

Workers greeted them.

One older woman hugged Claire.

A man thanked Nathan.

Then a young employee stopped them.

“Mr. Cole?”

“Yes?”

“I filed a safety report last week.”

Nathan waited.

“My supervisor said it would cost too much to fix.”

Nathan frowned.

“Did they threaten you?”

“No.”

“Good.”

He turned to the plant manager.

“Fix it.”

The manager nodded.

The young employee smiled.

Claire looked at Nathan.

“That wouldn’t have happened two years ago.”

“No.”

“You’ve changed the company.”

“We all did.”

They continued walking.

At the end of the shift, Nathan stood outside.

The sun was setting.

Claire joined him.

“Do you miss being anonymous?”

“Sometimes.”

“Why?”

“Because I didn’t have to wonder whether people liked me.”

She smiled.

“Do you still wonder?”

“Yes.”

Claire stepped closer.

“I don’t.”

Nathan looked at her.

“You don’t?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I’ve met both versions of you.”

She reached for his hand.

“I liked Nathan Brooks.”

Then she smiled.

“But I love Nathan Cole.”

He stared.

“You love me?”

“Yes.”

He laughed softly.

“I was terrified to hear that.”

“Why?”

“Because you know everything.”

She squeezed his hand.

“That’s why.”

They kissed.

For the first time, Nathan didn’t feel like he had to hide anything.

He had spent his entire adult life surrounded by people who knew his wealth.

Claire knew his failures.

His family’s secrets.

His fear.

And still chose him.

That night, Nathan received a call from Daniel.

“There’s one more thing.”

Nathan sighed.

“Of course there is.”

“We found the original files from the first accident.”

“What about them?”

“One name was removed.”

“Whose?”

Daniel paused.

“Your father.”

Nathan froze.

“Why would his name be removed?”

“I don’t know.”

“Where are the files?”

“On their way.”

Nathan stared at Claire.

The past wasn’t finished.

It had simply become quieter.
