At 23, She Inherited Her Father’s Dead Hardware Store — Then Found the Sealed Office He Died Protecting

Chapter 4

The SUV stayed outside for nearly twenty minutes.

No one got out.

Mason watched it.

Finally, it drove away.

Emily locked the doors.

“We need to copy everything.”

Mason nodded.

They photographed every document.

They scanned the maps.

They recorded the cassette.

Then Emily found something else.

A receipt.

It was dated six months earlier.

For a storage unit.

The address was in Columbus.

The payment had been made by Daniel Carter.

Emily stared.

“My father rented a storage unit.”

“Recently?”

“Yes.”

Mason checked the receipt.

“Paid in cash.”

“Why?”

“Maybe that’s where the missing evidence is.”

They drove there that night.

The storage facility was nearly empty.

Emily found the unit.

Number 47.

She entered the code from the receipt.

The door opened.

Inside were dozens of boxes.

But most were empty.

Someone had already searched the unit.

Emily walked deeper.

At the back was a metal trunk.

Locked.

The brass key opened it.

Inside were photographs.

A hard drive.

Several documents.

And a letter addressed to Emily.

She opened it.

Emily,

If you found the office, they know.

If you found this trunk, they know more.

Do not trust anyone who tells you the truth is buried in the past.

Because Harrington is still doing it.

Emily looked at Mason.

“What does that mean?”

She continued reading.

The land deals never stopped.

The same families are being forced out today.

The same company changed its name.

The same people are behind it.

Mason looked at the hard drive.

“Let’s see what’s on it.”

They took it to his house.

The files contained financial records from recent years.

Harrington Holdings had secretly purchased dozens of properties through shell companies.

The pattern was identical to the 1980s.

Buy low.

Create pressure.

Force owners to sell.

Demolish.

Build luxury developments.

Emily felt sick.

“This is happening now.”

Mason nodded.

Then he found something.

A list of names.

The next properties scheduled for acquisition.

At the bottom was:

Carter Hardware — pending foreclosure.

Emily stared.

Her father hadn’t been trying to save his store.

He had been protecting it.

Because the building sat on land Harrington desperately wanted.

And now that Daniel was dead, Harrington intended to take it.

Mason looked at her.

“You can’t stay here.”

Emily shook her head.

“I’m not leaving.”

“You don’t understand what you’re dealing with.”

“Yes, I do.”

She looked toward the store.

“My father spent thirty years collecting evidence.”

She picked up the hard drive.

“I think he left me a reason.”

Before they could continue, the lights went out.

Someone had cut the power.

Then glass shattered downstairs.

Mason grabbed his weapon.

Emily heard footsteps.

Someone was inside.
