He was furious.
“You’ve lost focus.”
Adrian stood across from him.
“I’m still graduating.”
“Because of her.”
“Yes.”
“You think I’m going to let you marry a scholarship student?”
Adrian stared.
“Marry?”
His father realized his mistake.
Adrian smiled bitterly.
“So that’s what you think.”
“I think she is using you.”
Adrian’s voice hardened.
“She has never asked me for anything.”
“She’s receiving tutoring money.”
“She earns that.”
“Your mother is paying her medical expenses.”
“That isn’t Sophia’s fault.”
His father slammed his hand onto the desk.
“This relationship ends now.”
“No.”
Adrian walked away.
His father threatened to cut him off.
Adrian didn’t care.
For the first time, he was willing to lose everything rather than lose Sophia.
But Sophia heard the argument.
That evening, she returned the envelope containing medical assistance.
Adrian was furious.
“Why?”
“Because I won’t be the reason you lose your family.”
“You aren’t.”
“I am.”
“No.”
She looked at him.
“Adrian, I love you.”
He froze.
“Then don’t leave.”
She cried.
“I don’t want your family to hate you because of me.”
“They already do.”
“Your father owns everything.”
“He doesn’t own me.”
Sophia shook her head.
“Maybe not.”
She looked at him.
“But I can’t live every day wondering whether I’m ruining your life.”
Adrian didn’t know what to say.
So he took her hand.
