Everyone Laughed at the Single Father at the Reunion—Then a Billionaire Crossed the Room for Him

Chapter 1

The laughter stopped the moment the richest man in the county crossed the crowded assembly hall toward the man everyone had just mocked.

Thomas Hale stood near the back wall with his seven-year-old daughter, Clara, holding a wooden cup of cider in one hand and trying to keep her from stepping on the hem of her dress with the other.

His coat was clean but patched at the elbow.

His boots were muddy.

His hair had been trimmed with a kitchen knife two days earlier.

Around him, former schoolmates stood beneath chandeliers, dressed in silk waistcoats, embroidered gowns, polished shoes, and coats that cost more than Thomas earned in half a year.

Thomas had almost not come.

Clara had begged him.

“Please, Papa.”

So he had borrowed a carriage from a neighbor, washed their best clothes, and traveled nearly twenty miles to the annual reunion of the old Hawthorne Academy.

He had expected awkward questions.

He had not expected laughter.

“Well, well,” Charles Whitcomb had said earlier, looking Thomas up and down. “I hardly recognized you.”

Thomas had smiled politely.

“It has been many years.”

Charles laughed.

“And you came dressed like a stable hand.”

Several men nearby chuckled.

Thomas said nothing.

Then Charles noticed Clara.

“A daughter?”

Thomas nodded.

“My wife died.”

The laughter faded briefly.

Charles recovered quickly.

“How unfortunate.”

Thomas tightened his hand around the cup.

Clara looked up at him.

“Papa, why are they laughing?”

Thomas crouched beside her.

“They aren’t laughing at you.”

Charles smirked.

“No, Thomas. We are laughing at what you’ve become.”

That was when the hall doors opened.

Every conversation stopped.

A tall man entered wearing a dark blue coat with silver buttons.

The room seemed to make space for him without anyone being asked.

Nathaniel Blackwood.

Merchant.

Landowner.

Banker.

The richest man in three counties.

People whispered his name as he walked inside.

Thomas barely noticed.

He was too busy trying to take Clara somewhere quieter.

Then Nathaniel saw him.

He stopped.

His expression changed.

And without saying a word to anyone, the billionaire crossed the entire hall.

Straight toward Thomas.
